Simple Checks to Perform While Taking a Test Drive for Used Cars

Used Cars

Here are a few checks you can perform while taking a test drive of any used car.

Once you decided to buy a used car, there is nothing like it. You have a budget and want to work around it and see what you can get in that amount. Once you have zeroed down the options that are shown to you, the first thing you need to do, which is mandatory, is take it out for a test drive. This needs to be done because it is the only way where you will know how the car performs, even after so many kilometres on the odometer.

Take the car out for a test drive and execute these simple checks:-

  • Check the acceleration of the car: – The pick-up of the car may have suffered for sure, but the car should be able to do a good bit of highway driving. If you go above 80kmph, keep a dedicated eat out for squeaks, steering wobble and rattles.
  •  Engine noise is another thing that needs to be checked during a highway drive:- The more the noise, the less maintained the car, which translates into higher maintenance.
  • You should also check if the gears engage smoothly: – if it does not, the clutch plate might have an issue. Or maybe, there is some problem with the transmission system.
  • Take the car uphill and then accelerate ahead: – the test will make you realize if the engine suffers from fatigue on a steep slope.
  • Suspension is one thing that needs to be checked, and what is a better way to find out than to take it on the road with a few potholes maybe. All-in-all, you should ensure that there are no suspension squeaks and noise. If there are any you discover, it means that the car needs work done before it is a good purchase.
  • Make sure you check the car’s brakes: – you should see if they do precisely what they are meant to do; you should stop the car in time. Also, try and gauge the pulsing feel on the brake pedal if the car is equipped with ABS. Check with the seller on that as well.

There are a few more things that you can keep in mind before you finalize the used car that you want to buy. At the end of it all, though, we robustly recommend that you show the car to a mechanic to check out the car and give you complete feedback.
